Sir John A. Macdonald - 2010

Contact: Kathy Gladden

Team Type: Club

Campaign Goal:

To reduce energy consumption in the school by 10% this year.

What did we do?

Promoted with posters, stickers on light switches in every room, custodian shut off half the lights in hallway starting in the fall, announcements for reminders to staff and students.

The Best Part

Our energy consumption decreased almost 4 % by January 2010.

Keep it simple, make it fun!

Comments about the Campaign

At first, people thought the halls were a little dark but in the matter of a day or two everyone adjusted to the new lighting regime quickly and accepted it as the new norm.

Did We Reach our Goal?

We haven’t received the energy consumption readings for the spring yet so not sure if we hit the 10% decrease.

What we are most proud of

The Environmental Club is a small group but very passionate and dedicated so it was a matter of a handful of students encouraging this change in our school.

What we are planning to work on next

We are thinking for next year, we want our school to go “recyclable bottle free) where we encourage using reusable water bottles and get rid of bottled water etc. in the building.

Additional Info

Our Environmental Club also did the following campaigns this year:

  • Winter Holiday hand-made decoration sale : proceeds sent to an Uganda Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Centre (connection through a staff member at out school)
  • Fair Trade coffee bean guess : proceeds went to adopting a whale shark through World Wildlife Fund
