Team Name: DC Planet

Team Type: Club

Campaign Goal:

To bring awareness of the issues of water shortages, cleanliness, and impacts of this on children and women in some parts of the world.

What did we do?

  • We had students sign up per class to take the Challenge, and then reflect on their experience by writing and putting these up on a bulletin board.
  • Students had to use water for all their needs from the one bucket for the whole day.
  • Grades 1-6 (about 160 students) did a “Walk for Water” carrying buckets of water around our school field 125 times altogether.

The Best Part

Students could experience a little of what it is like to have to conserve water, and how it would impact your life if you had to spend hours each day collecting water.

Advice

Do a fundraiser for WaterCan in conjunction with the campaign.

Comments about the Campaign

I didn’t hear any remarks from parents, but I think the students who participated seemed to connect with the issues raised. Some students were quite affected by the thought that there were children their age who had to live in this way.

Did We Reach our Goal?

We didn’t have a specific goal; however, awareness was raised as indicated by the students’ ability to answer questions about the issue.

What we are most proud of

I was most proud that the students wanted to try out doing something a little bit difficult to honour the difficulties that their peers in other parts of the world live as a daily experience.
