West Dover School - 2015

Contact: Henriette Dalberg

Team Name: West Dover Eco Team

Team Type: Club

Campaign Goal:

Paper towel conservation because of the amount of paper towel waste in the school. Students were using approximately 2-3 paper towels each time they washed their hands. We wanted to reduce consumption by 10%.

What did we do?

  • We had an assembly to increase awareness and we made morning announcements.
  • We measured paper towel usage from the initial month and recent month

The Best Part

The assembly in which students were given the opportunity to present information.

Advice

Our biggest challenge: To get everyone to "buy in" to "Shake and Fold" (teachers especially). Our advice: It is a good idea to use a variety of ways to spread the word - videos, play, puppets, posters, announcements (make it fun).

Comments about the Campaign

People thought that it was very effective; They were very proud of the students for doing such a great job.

Did We Reach our Goal?

We reduced paper towel consumption by 25%! Students noted that the school knows what “Shake and Fold” means and that they are using the steps in school.

What we are planning to work on next

Next Steps: Continuation of contests. Focus on one area. Composting. Continuation of teacher leaders to lead next year’s team.
